Signs Your Dryer Vent Needs Cleaning

Dryer vent cleaning is one of the most critical home maintenance tasks for both efficiency and home safety. When lint bypasses the dryer's lint trap, it accumulates inside the exhaust duct, narrowing the pathway for hot air and moisture. Over time, this restriction creates severe backpressure that can overheat the dryer and burn out the heating element.

The most common sign of a clogged dryer vent is that clothes take multiple cycles to dry. If a single load of laundry takes 80 to 90 minutes instead of the normal 35 to 45 minutes, your exhaust is likely blocked. This extra running time leads to high electricity usage and premature wear on your appliance.

Another warning sign is if the dryer feels extremely hot to the touch during a cycle, or if you notice a faint burning smell when running a load. The lint trap inside a dryer is highly flammable; when hot air cannot escape, it backs up directly into the heating chamber. This is a primary driver of home appliance fires.

Finally, check the exterior dryer vent hood while the dryer is running. If the flap does not open, or if you can see visible lint packed around the opening, your vent is severely restricted. Clearing this immediately prevents fire hazards and saves you money on utility bills.
